Origins of LEFT
LEFT was founded in 1924 when a group of researchers, citing mental
problems encountered by lefthanded children when forced to write right-
handed in school, set out to change a centuries-old mindset that using
the left hand for commonly righthanded tasks was inherently wrong.
Following the lead of the then-young American Civil Liberties Union,
these researchers enlisted the help of educators, experts in propaganda,
and a nationwide network of supporters.
The uphill climb was difficult and took years of intense work, but by
the early 1960's the team had declared victory over forced righthandedness.
Subsequently LEFT set out to ensure equal representation in both
government and industry, and they will not stop until a lefthanded pair
of scissors is sold next to a righthanded pair in every thrift store.
